About Codeine

Codeine is a member of the opioid class of medications and is used to manage pain. Codeine can also help to treat cough. For mild-to-moderate pain, codeine is often used as a combined medication with acetaminophen or with an NSAID like ibuprofen.

Codeine helps to relieve mild to moderate pain in people who are expected to need an opioid pain medication. Also who cannot be treated with other pain medications. It is also used in the combination with other medications to temporarily relieve cough. Caused by the common cold, the flu, or other conditions in adults. How to use?

Codeine (alone or in combination with other medications) comes as an immediate-release tablet an extended-release tablet, a solution (liquid), and syrup to take by mouth. If codeine is used to treat pain, it is usually taken every 4 hours as needed for pain. If codeine solution or syrup (in combination with other medications) is used to temporarily relieve cough. It is usually taken every 4 to 6 hours as needed. If codeine extended-release tablets can be taken temporarily to relieve cough, it is usually taken every 12 hours as needed. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Take codeine exactly as directed.

If you are taking it to relieve pain, your doctor may adjust your dose during your treatment, depending on how well your pain is controlled and on the side effects that you experience. Talk to your doctor about how you are feeling during your treatment with codeine. Tell your doctor if you feel that your pain is not controlled or if your pain increases, becomes worse. if you have new pain or an increased sensitivity to pain during your treatment with codeine. Do not take more of it or take it more often than prescribed by your doctor.

How to consume the drugs.

If you have taken it for several weeks or longer, do not stop taking the medication without talking to your doctor. Your doctor may decrease your dose gradually. If you suddenly stop taking codeine, you may experience withdrawal symptoms such as restlessness, widened pupils (black circles in the center of the eyes), teary eyes, irritability, anxiety, runny nose, difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep, yawning, sweating, fast breathing, fast heartbeat, chills, hair on your arms standing on end, nausea, loss of appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach cramps, muscle aches, or backache.

 Side effects

Codeine may cause side effects. Tell your doctor if any of these symptoms are severe or do not go away:

  • dizziness
  • difficulty urinating
